catman — generate whatis database files

SYNOPSIS

catman [-M path] [-w]

DESCRIPTION

The catman utility generates a set of whatis database files suitable for use with apropos(1) and whatis(1). It is supplied for compatibility reasons. The same databases can be generated using the -w option with man(1), and that command should be used instead.

OPTIONS

-M path: Generate the whatis database files within the specified colon separated manual paths. Overrides the MANPATH environment variable.
-w: This option is present for backwards compatibility, and is ignored.

ENVIRONMENT

The following environment variables affect the execution of catman:

MANPATH: Used to specify a colon separated list of manual paths within which to generate whatis database files.

EXIT STATUS

The catman utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs.
